The book is a pioneering work done in the field of sports medicine. Although the concept of elite young athlete is not a recent one but the way the authors have addressed the issues pertaining to elite young athlete is fresh, unique and commendable. The book divided into eleven chapters covers very concisely the multitude aspects governing the performance of young athlete. It addresses the factors concerning physiology, diet, different types of training at different levels of maturation, testing and prescription of exercise, effect of internal and external factors on body, important conditions like sudden cardiac death and common injuries and its prevention in relation to young elite athlete.

The book provides comprehensive evidence based information that permeates the world of elite young athletes, and addresses how the elite young athlete differs in growth and development from other children and adults.

The authors have concisely covered relevant information pertaining to elite young athlete with details of data available in the recent researches. The book is a great resource with easy accessibility of studies on elite athletes in comparison to children and adults and discusses the factors affecting their performance and how to cope with them.

It is a reader friendly book with clear easy access to data, facts and figures. The authors have described the topics in a meticulous manner. It defines the key areas of elite young athlete and concentrates on development and growth of young athlete. It examines and explains how males and females differ in their physiology, development and training protocol.

The strength of the research work is clearly reflected by the fact that it is understandable and the issues have been covered in an extant approach. It has certain limitations, like it does not tell us what corroborates the performance of elite young athletes. It would have been of great significance had there been a section discussing the overall reasons for poor performances. For instance, it covers everything about nutrition and loading, but what specific amounts of different constituents in food are required for optimal performance have not been clearly mentioned. Further, while discussing the resistance training in young athletes, it is essential that one should take into consideration the factors which may hinder growth and maturation in young children. Another important variable which invariably has an impact on other parameters is the psyche of young athlete for which special mention needs to be made. Further recommendations and guidelines may be drawn for coaches keeping in view the special considerations and requirements of young athlete. In addition, it would have been of great relevance had the authors taken into account the pre-participation examination in case of young elite athletes and differences if any, in regard to other population of athletes.

Overall, every sportsperson especially the young athletes, parents, coaches, fitness trainers, sports scientists and sports physiotherapists, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and a person who is doing a doctorate in sports medicine should read this book as it covers essential parameters about the sports medicine world of elite young athlete. The book is conceptual and logically written and is recommended for sports fraternity without hesitation.
